Frequents Asked Questions

1. Can I see an overview of the course?

A detailed outline of the two-year course curriculum can be found here. As an overview, here is what the course will cover:
• Basics of sounds, bols, theory and exercises.
• Basic taals and variations of Keherva, Hinch, Dadra, Khemto, Dipchandi and Rupak. This will allow you to play with bhajans (Indian devotional songs) quite comfortably.
• Lots of practical, useful and valuable insights from global expert players who have had many years of experience playing with bhajans.
• There is very minimal classical tabla in the whole course.

This course is unique in many ways and has lots to offer for those who are primarily interested in learning how to play tabla with bhajans.

2. How is this course different to other courses?

• The focus of this course is to teach students how to play taals that are used with the majority of bhajans (Indian devotional songs).
• There is very little classical tabla taught, as the objective of this course is very clear: to teach how to play with bhajans first. Thereafter, if you wish to learn classical tabla, the road ahead will be open and easier for you.
• There are several things about this course which will further explain ‘Why you should learn with us’.

3. What in your view is a good age range for students to learn tabla?

This course will help students of all ages. In particular, the age group at which the course has been presented is between 12 and 55 years. This is so that it can be learnt at a reasonably mature level, without much difficulty or support required.

4. Is this only about theoretical notes and videos and not face-to-face practical lessons?

All our classes are online; there are no face-to-face tutorials.

5. What is the length of each of the class videos in the course?

Each full class video is approximately 25-30 minutes long. But each class will be broken down and available to watch in bite-size video clips.

6. Can I select which modules I would like to do?

Unfortunately, that is not an option we can provide. But you can do 1 module at a time to suit your time availability. Each module has information that is vital to the next module, without which it will be hard to progress.

7. Do we have to attend the classes in consecutive weeks?

You will have 16 weeks to complete 10 classes, to allow for a busy schedule, or illness, holidays, etc. But remember, the longer the gap without practice, the harder it becomes to retain your knowledge and skill level.

8. Can I download all the resources?

• You can download/print all the course notes to keep as a permanent record for yourself to review at any time even after the course is finished.
• The other resources are not downloadable.

9. Will you provide a certificate at the end of the course?

After passing each module’s exam, we will provide you with an e-certificate.
We will also award you a certificate to confirm that you have fully attended and completed this Tabla for Beginner’s Course.

11. What language are the classes in?

The classes, videos and notes are all in very simple English, so they are easy to understand. However,
the bhajans you learn to play along with are in Hindi or Gujarati, as this is the primary aim of the
course – to teach enthusiasts to play with bhajans (devotional songs).

14. Can groups of students learn under 1 account?

This is neither practical or fruitful for various obvious reasons:
1. Every learner has different paces of learning. Some may need to repeat things and some may want to move ahead.
2. If someone misses a few classes, then they will fall behind as the group will have moved ahead.
3. The actual course only keeps a record of 1 student at a time.
Hence, we are sorry that we cannot facilitate group learning through our course.

15. I have an old pair of tabla which I wish to use for this course. Is that ok?

We are glad you asked this question. It is not essential that any learner has a brand new pair of tabla. An old or unused pair can also be used. However, it is important even for a beginner to play or practice on a pair of tabla which produce clear and decent sounds. So, we recommend you ask around and find someone locally who could tune your tabla for you before you begin.

16. Are there options for purchasing the course?

Yes we have several options. Currently, you can either purchase 1 module at a time or you can purchase 1 year.
If you purchase the 1 year option, then you save more than 4 classes worth of money.
